15 learners at the age of 22-77, from 11 different European countries took part in the Grundtvig Workshop „Education Through Sport”, which was held in Estonia in July, 9.-14.
Participants from Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Greece, Spain, France and the United Kingdom had opportunities to further their knowledge during lectures, discussions, workshops, educational films, knowledge tests, and debates about Olympic education and Estonian Sports culture. They also developed their individual and social skills, experienced the synergy of multinational teamwork, and the sharing of knowledge and insights on sport education with each other. In addition, various handicraft and dance workshops took place in order to examine the connections between sport and culture in practical ways.
Naturally, several sports activities were held during the Workshop including morning exercises and Estonian national sports such as tug-of-war and pulling a sick crossword. The main highlight was the Mini Olympic Games which followed the principles of the Olympic Charter in its mentality, essence and rituals, and gave participants practical experiences in various sports, games and teamwork. The feeling of ‘us’ arose, and was maintained as the common theme at the Grande Finale of the Workshop thus unifying the participants, and providing wonderful memories of the Workshop.
During the Workshop, participants learned much about Estonia and Olympic sports as well as sport in other counties, improved their communication skills, developed teamwork and language skills as well as improving their self confidence. „The promotion of full active participation was great. /.../ A multicultural group was very effective and successful and enriched the experience.”
The participants are expected to use the knowledge acquired at the Workshop and the model of the School Olympic Games in their home countries as a basis for uniting their communities.
